France owns two islands right off the east coast of North America, St. Pierre and Miquelon, perilously close to Maine and our fish supply. I'm not sure if this is a recent development, but if so, it is evidence of a gradual, insidious encirclement. Zydeco music too.

1. chief of state: President Jacques CHIRAC of France 2. legal system: French law with special adaptations for local conditions 3. political parties: two of the four listed have English names - Left Radical Party and Socialist Party 4. Independance: none (territorial collectivity of France; has been under French control since 1763) 5. religion - Roman Catholic 99% 6. climate - cold and wet, with much mist and fog; spring and autumn are windy 7. terrain: mostly barren rock 8. natural hazards: persistent fog throughout the year can be a maritime hazard It sounds to me the only reason this place was never taken from the French is on account of the fact that nobody else would ever want to live there. |

Something about this place does not add up. I think that the French using are planning to use this otherwise useless territory as a base to take control of Quebec and parts of New Brunswick once the Quebecois people unilaterally declare their independence.
